VALDEZ PIONEER FIELD AIRPORT

(PAVD)

Airport Environment

Valdez Pioneer Field Airport is the primary airport serving Valdez and the surrounding Prince William Sound region. Located along the Richardson Highway near the Port of Valdez, the airport sits in a narrow valley surrounded by the Chugach Mountains and adjacent to the Valdez Arm of Prince William Sound. The rugged, mountainous terrain and proximity to water contribute to frequent turbulence, low visibility, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Valdez is accessible by road from mainland Alaska, but winter weather can impact highway travel. Aircraft typically approach from the west, navigating the confined valley.

NavShare Offering

The RNAV (GPS) M RWY 06 procedure was designed to enhance access to Valdez Pioneer Field Airport during challenging weather, common in this region. Utilizing satellite-based guidance with WAAS technology, this procedure provides precise navigation to the runway environment. It’s the only vertically guided procedure serving this terrain challenged airport. It features a stabilized glidepath with a runway based missed approach point (MAP) and was designed to minimize time spent over high terrain.
